In days gone by, a technology such as smart lighting would have been seen as a far-flung dream that could never become an actual possibility. After all, even as recently as 30 years ago, who could predict that lights would be able to completely eradicate the need for you to get up and flick a switch to turn them on or off? In simple terms, that's exactly what smart lighting is – bulbs that will activate automatically, in accordance with the conditions.
Though the technology is still in relative infancy, hopes are high that it will soon be readily available in homes and commercial premises on a broad scale in the near future. For the moment, though, smart lighting is largely confined to industrial buildings, but it's growing in profile.
A leading light
Global American bank, JPMorgan Chase, recently ordered that smart LED lighting be installed in each of its 5,000 U.S. offices. It is thought that, once completed, the smart lighting project could feasibly slice energy consumption by half. Not only does this represent a big financial saving, but the impact on the company's carbon footprint will also be reduced, too.
It's not only lighting power that's being saved; each installation is connected to a sensor network that can control many other facets of the building's facilities, including climate-control in rooms that are occupied (or not, but are about to be) and linked security systems.
There are several reasons why your business or commercial building can benefit from having smart lighting installed.
"The falling costs of including controls in lighting projects has made the decision to implement these systems much easier. From dimming ballasts to controls software, as well as the prices of LEDs themselves, all of the key components in networked lighting controls systems are becoming less expensive," said Jesse Foote, of Navigant Research, in a statement.
In the same press release, Navigant stated that it expected spending on smart lighting to reach approximately US$38.2 billion (NZ$47 billion) across the 10 years between 2015-2024 – will your firms be one of them?
Benefits of smart lighting
There are several reasons why your business or commercial building can benefit from having smart lighting installed. Perhaps the most obvious is that it can help you make serious savings in your energy bill, as smart lighting bulbs will be on only when they need to be. Additionally, you won't have to waste time fiddling with numerous switches and settings to ensure that your building's lighting system is at it most energy efficient, as it's all controlled from a master console.
